The city library continues to surprise me. Pleasantly, I might add. Today I found (and borrowed) "The Dairy of a Cavalry Officer 1809-1815, Lt.-Col William Tompkinson" and "Wellington's Lieutenant, Napoleon's Gaoler: Peninsular letters and St. Helena diaries of Sir George Ridout Bingham". :D

ooooh, Tompkinson is great, but he was wounded at Albergaria Nove and went back to England (returns to the Peninsula in 11 or 12, I think), but his tale of being wounded, transpoted and generally taken care of is really enlightening! (I think I send you some quotes from that while we were still in Coimbra and getting ready to move out)

heheh, the first night out from Coimbra is their first time they have to bivouac (no billets) and they unpack all their nifty gadgets they brought from home... and nothing really works! It's so funny! AND they could not get a wink of sleep that night because the frogs were croaking so loud... REAL frogs, not French ones!
