A/N: if the fic that gave 'birth' to this drabble and the one I wrote for prompt 9 ever ends up being finished, I think I can die happy. XD
A day turns into two, then three, before long a week has passed since Major Sharpe has gone missing from the army's camp. The men under his command are restless and resentful for not being allowed to mount a search, the few friends he has among officers too have started to grumble. Hogan has not said anything yet, more understanding of his motives than the rest, but he can see the growing worry in the man's eyes, he can read frustration at not being able to help in his features.
He asks for any news from an exploring officer, for all the world looking like Sharpe had better return mortally wounded if he does not want to face severe consequences, while behind the mask he is scared that Sharpe may not return at all. And when, on the evening of the tenth day he is told that a Portuguese local found a bloodied Rifleman's jacket, he realises that, perhaps, he really did not know what desperation meant until this moment.
